How to Care for Eyelash Extensions

Lash extensions being gently cleansed with foam and a soft brush

You’ve invested in a beautiful set of eyelash extensions. Now it’s time to look after them.

A consistent aftercare routine keeps your extensions clean, comfortable and looking their best, and reduces stress on your natural lashes. Whether you wear classic, hybrid or volume lashes, good lash hygiene belongs in your daily routine.

1. Clean your lashes regularly

Natural oils, make-up residue, dust and everyday debris build up around the lash line, so cleaning is one of the most important parts of aftercare. Use a gentle cleanser made for eyelash extensions.

How to clean your lashes

  1. Wet your lashes with clean water.
  2. Apply a suitable lash cleanser.
  3. Gently cleanse along the lash line with a soft lash brush.
  4. Rinse thoroughly, without rubbing.
  5. Pat dry gently with a clean, lint-free towel.
  6. Let your lashes dry, then brush them carefully.

After a fresh set, follow Nabeelah’s advice on how long to keep your lashes dry before the first cleanse.

2. Brush your lashes gently

Once your lashes are dry, brush through them with a clean spoolie using light strokes. It keeps them neat and separated. Never pull, tug or force tangled extensions apart.

3. Don’t rub your eyes

Rubbing can twist and tangle extensions, or make them fall out early. Be especially gentle when you:

  • remove make-up;
  • wash your face;
  • dry your face with a towel;
  • apply skincare around your eyes.

Your natural lashes need protecting just as much as your extensions.

4. Choose your skincare carefully

Some oil-based products can weaken lash adhesive or leave residue around the lash line. Keep heavy creams, oils and make-up off the lash line, and check with your technician which products are compatible with your set.

5. Be careful when you sleep

Try not to sleep face-down. Pressure and friction against your pillow can bend and flatten extensions. A clean pillowcase, and less friction, helps.

6. Avoid heat and friction

High heat and steam can affect some lash systems, especially in the first day or two after a fresh set. Avoid:

  • direct heat from hair dryers and styling tools;
  • rubbing your lashes with towels;
  • pulling or fiddling with your lashes;
  • using an eyelash curler on extensions.

7. Keep up with your refills

Natural lashes grow and shed as part of their normal cycle, so your extensions gradually look less full. Nabeelah offers refills at 2 and 3 weeks for every set, and will recommend the right timing for your lashes. Don’t wait until your lashes are very uneven or tangled before booking.

Your daily lash-care routine

Morning

  • Gently brush your dry lashes.
  • Check that your extensions feel comfortable.
  • Leave them alone as much as possible.

Evening

  • Remove eye make-up carefully.
  • Clean your lashes with a suitable cleanser.
  • Rinse and pat dry gently.
  • Brush once dry.

Consistency matters more than using lots of products.

Signs your lashes need attention

Contact Nabeelah if you notice:

  • unusual twisting or tangling;
  • heavy or uneven shedding;
  • extensions pulling on your natural lashes;
  • build-up that gentle cleaning won’t remove.

If you develop redness, swelling, pain, discharge or persistent itching, seek medical advice rather than treating it as an aftercare issue. Don’t remove extensions yourself; you can book a professional lash removal.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash my eyelash extensions?

Yes. Regular, gentle cleansing is essential for lash hygiene.

How often should I clean them?

Follow your technician’s advice and the cleanser’s instructions. Cleaning regularly is better than letting residue build up.

Can I wear mascara with extensions?

Most extension styles don’t need it. If you’d like to wear mascara, check with your technician first and avoid waterproof or oil-based formulas.

Why are my extensions falling out?

Some shedding is normal as your natural lashes go through their cycle. Heavy shedding can also come from friction, incompatible products or the application.

When should I book a refill?

Usually at 2 or 3 weeks, depending on your natural lash cycle and how full you like your lashes. Nabeelah will recommend what suits you.
